Bâtiment IV, a house full of talents

It is thanks to the future European Capital of Culture, Esch 2022, the FrEsch association, and the Cueva association that "Bâtiment 4" was able to slowly come to life.

“Bâtiment 4” (building 4), a very low-brow name for a location that will become “must-to-see” in the Luxembourg artistic landscape. The building of 3000m2 formerly disused and victim of aging breathes again today and is sheltering more than 100 artists who gave him a full makeover, filled with colors and fantasies of all kinds ...

Not yet entered the building, we notice well-known artists linked to ArcelorMittal Luxembourg such as Alain Welter who recently covered the 3 chimneys of the Differdange steelworks with a monumental wall art, but also Alec. At ArcelorMittal Luxembourg, Alec the graffiti artist and comic book designer is known by his other name, Loïc Henrion, our Graphic Designer for 12 years now. He represented a lion facing a puma made by his big brother.

I am the little brother of an independent artist based in Luxembourg. From an early age, I was fortunate to have been taken under his wing. We did a lot of “piece” (graffiti) in common, we were complementary, as we easily understood each other on the final vision of each work. After my “comic book” interlude, I wanted to dive back into other ways of expressing myself. This collective exhibition at Bâtiment 4 was timely. This wall art shows our reunion, these two felines looking at each other illustrate each’s strength, the artistic rage that we have for a unique work.

Once the front doors passed, our eyes are appealed by every corner. Every room, every hallway and every stair is exploited in favor of artistic expression. Building 4, once the management building of ArcelorMittal Schifflange, which will be transformed in an exemplary reconversion into an eco-district, then becomes a maze of rooms arousing our senses and our curiosity.

ArcelorMittal Luxembourg is proud to see how building 4 is being useful to a collective of artists wishing to provide an extraordinary experience for its visitors. To welcome them, the l’Œuvre de la Grande Duchesse Charlotte, partner of the project, made a donation to create this special place to then hand over to the city of Esch-sur-Alzette for the works necessary to host an external public. Building IV has since become a “third place”, understood as a place for meetings and collective experiments, without labeled activity, spaces are not fixed, so that non-programmed uses can find their place, at the same time. At the end of this collective exhibition, Cueva will give way to other associations, artists, amateurs and inhabitants of the region ...

Building IV will also contribute to the economic and touristic development strategy of the City of Esch by revitalizing a neighborhood, offering residents a new place to live, family and open, by supporting innovation and promoting sustainable development.

Already present in the Esch-sur-Alzette cultural panorama through its historical support for the gallery Schlassgoart and the hosting of certain events during the Night of Culture, ArcelorMittal Luxembourg is supporting this project which bridges the gap between public cultural policy and private initiative, and allows to open a space of expression to the actors of the local cultural world .
Roland Bastian, Vice-President of ArcelorMittal Luxembourg
