Manifesto “Zero Single Use Plastic”

A company without single use plastic

In our administrative sites of ArcelorMittal Luxembourg, we have recently renewed our coffee machines.

What is the point of talking about it externally?

These machines do not supply cup or stirrers and are an integral part of a process we have decided to adopt at ArcelorMittal Luxembourg: the abolition of the use of single-use plastic.

Indeed, ArcelorMittal Luxembourg, with 53 other Luxembourg companies, has signed a manifesto that commits us to eliminate the use of single-use plastic in our administrative offices by the end of 2020. We are entering a transition period where we are inviting you to reduce your use of these plastic products.

Reducing our plastic consumption can result in different actions:

  • Bring your own cup or bottle to fill it with water fountains,
  • Use reusable cutlery,
  • Refuse plastic bags if you buy your lunch outside.

Actions we wish our employees to adopt by signing this manifesto.

A significant ecological impact

These everyday actions are as economic as they are ecological: today 70% of the waste found in the sea or on beaches is made of disposable plastic and this simple change in our consumption habits would reduce our participation in the ocean pollution. More than 350,000 million tons of plastics are produced each year. If nothing is done, 12 billion tons of plastic will be found by 2050 in the oceans.

The use of 121 tons of plastic and the generation of as many tons of immediate waste are thus saved every year thanks to the commitment of ArcelorMittal Luxembourg and the other 53 companies involved in the manifesto Zero Single Use Plastic.

IMS (Inspire More Sustainability) brings together each year the major players in the Luxembourg economy around themes that are important to corporate Social Responsibility during the Luxembourg Sustainability Forum. This year was an opportunity to shape the commitment made by companies on September 11, 2018 by the delivery of the manifest to the representatives of the signatories.
