The ArcelorMittal building IV, in the Schlassgoard area in Esch-sur-Alzette, becomes a cultural place

In May 2020, ArcelorMittal Luxembourg offered to frEsch, an association created to contribute to the cultural strategy of the City of Esch-sur-Alzette, the free loan of the building IV located in Esch-sur-Alzette for a 3 years period. Enclosed in the Schlassgoard area where the AOB and the ArcelorMittal University are already located, Building IV offers an indoor space of 3,000m² as well as an outdoor space of 5,000m² for future occupants, associations and artists. It will also host events, exterior works and ephemeral architectures.

A meeting and collective representation place

The project, sponsored by the oeuvre nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse, consists in transforming Building IV into a "cultural place", understood as a place of meetings and collective experiments, without labeled activity, whose spaces are not frozen, so that non-programmed uses can find their place over time. He will see himself at the heart of social innovation with the desire of artists to create a place of experimentation with responses to current societal challenges: climate change, ecological challenges, economic of the future, social, political or health crises, withdrawal of identity, etc.

Symbol of a "different life", Building IV will be the laboratory of a more open and united society, concerned by all cultures, openness to others, sharing new forms of collective work, but also all re-economics, permaculture, etc.

Associations which are lacking space, will be able to express themselves and get involved in new projects while getting rid of the space constraints previously experienced. Building IV will therefore be a field of expression and experimentation for all of the current arts and also all of cultural activities in the broad sense.

Visitors to the park and especially the employees of the surrounding buildings will be able to visit the new tenants of Buildings IV and participate in the artistic activities. The calendar of events has not yet been announced, but as part of Esch 2022, the European Capital of Culture, the associations and artists located in the building will carry out announced events as spontaneous performances.

A building under renovation

Building IV is located on the perimeter of the brownfield site of Esch-Schifflange. Its rehabilitation is fully in line with the transition to the total transformation of the site, between the old town and the future district of Esch-Schifflange, under the sign of creativity. It will also contribute to the economic and tourist development strategy of the City of Esch by revitalizing the district, by offering a new place of life, family and open.

This conversion of an old Arbed building is also fully part of the ArcelorMittal Group’s CSR strategy in Luxembourg, part of the real estate assets of which can thus be reconverted into different living spaces meeting the challenges of tomorrow.

After many years, Building IV will reopen its doors from the start of the 2020 academic year!

Already present in the Esch-sur-Alzette cultural panorama through its historical support for the Schlassgoart gallery and the hosting of some Night of Culture events, ArcelorMittal Luxembourg is supporting this project which bridges public cultural policy and private initiative , and allows to open a space of expression to the actors of the local cultural world.
