Esch-sur-Alzette, October 18, 2019 - The University of Luxembourg and ArcelorMittal have agreed to continue their collaboration in research on steel construction and civil engineering. Since 2010, ArcelorMittal Luxembourg has been one of the main partners and supports of the University of Luxembourg.

This support will fund research focused on enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of steel construction, for example the circular economy and the reduction of the carbon footprint in the construction sector will be focused for the next three years.

Like Steligence®, the Chair will work on a modular steel construction system that allows the dismantling and reuse of the elements after their first use. In this case, the life cycle of the elements can restart without any retransformation of the raw material or related carbon emissions.

Professor Odenbreit

In principle, steel beams have no limited life. You can reuse them after 30 years and they will keep the same properties as the first day if they are processed correctly.

The signatories of the Chair (left to right):

  • Stéphane Pallage, University of Luxembourg director,
  • Michel Wurth, President of ArcelorMittal Luxembourg,
  • Yves Elsen, president of governance board of the University of Luxembourg,
  • Valérie Massin, Head of Country Management of ArcelorMittal Luxembourg

The research will focus on different areas: the design of modular components to meet lift capacity requirements, an incentive to standardize construction parts, and the development of digital tools to store history and specificities techniques of each individual component.

Professor Olivier Vassart

Steligence® CEO

This collaboration with the University is also an opportunity for us to identify the young talents who will join us tomorrow.

ArcelorMittal has been supporting the Chair since 2010, with a total amount of 1.6 million euros over the entire period.
