ArcelorMittal supports flood protection in Bavaria

Deggendorf, 6 August 2013 - Flooding of the Danube at the beginning of June caused extensive damage in towns and villages. Deggendorf in Lower Bavaria was one of worst hit places at the time. Clearing up work after the June floods is still in full swing and urgent measures to repair the flood damage have been implemented.

Prime Minister Horst Seehofer and Minister for the Environment Dr Marcel Huber were on site in Deggendorf today to see for themselves the progress made on construction work to repair the dykes.

ArcelorMittal is supplying the communities of Deggendorf, Niederalteich and Winzer with steel sheet piling to repair the dykes and safeguard them against future flooding. More than 30,000 square metres of the PU 8 S profile, which is particularly suitable for flood protection, is being used here to reinforce over 4.3 kilometres of dykes and embankments. Only 48 hours after commissioning, it was possible to hand over the first sheet pile wall profiles from a special rolling operation to Reinhold Meister Wasserbau GmbH from Hengersberg, the company responsible for carrying out the construction work. Up to 130 linear metres of the dyke core are made secure each day using the high-frequency vibration method.

ArcelorMittal manufactures and supplies the sheet pile walls from its Luxembourg plant in Belval. The seven metre long and 1.2 metre wide double piles with a continuous wall thickness of eight millimetres form a stabilising cut-off wall. It will considerably strengthen the dyke core and in future will reliably prevent percolation both through and from below. This will ensure the long-term structural integrity of the dykes and embankments.

A further approx. 10,500 m² of steel pile walls will shortly be used in Fischerdorf, which was also affected by the floods, for reconstruction of the Saubach pumping station. On behalf of Mayerhofer Hoch-, Tief- und Ingenieurbau GmbH from Simbach, ArcelorMittal is producing profiles of the AZ - 700 series for this project. These profiles are especially cost-efficient in view of their ratio of section modulus to dead weight.

ArcelorMittal is the world’s leading manufacturer of sheet pile walls with the widest and most innovative product range. Find more information about ArcelorMittal's sheetpiles here:
